Mingei River
architecture

2024

Design of a Museum in Takayama, JAP, exploring the future of Mingei. The concept investigates how Mingei’s connection to the flows of nature can usher in a more balanced resource management future.

The new museum is dedicated to maintaining the craft of a local red Mingei lacquer. The architecture is set up as a series of shells which are are in conversation with exterior spatial conditions. The building architecturally opens up to the adjacent river. Logistically, the museum hosts an on-site experimental lacquer tree garden, and the HQ for a local lacquer tree harvesting program.
